FAQs for Starting Solids with Your Baby

When should I start introducing solids to my baby?
The general recommendation is to start solids around 6 months of age. Every baby is different, so it’s important to look for signs of readiness, such as being able to sit up with support, showing interest in food, and having good head and neck control.

What foods should I start with?
It’s best to begin with single-ingredient, iron-rich foods like pureed vegetables (e.g., sweet potatoes, carrots), fruits (e.g., apples, pears), or cereals. Starting with these simple, easily digestible foods helps identify any food sensitivities or allergies.

How do I know if my baby is ready for more textured foods?
As your baby gets the hang of purees, you can start introducing foods with a slightly thicker texture. Signs your baby is ready include chewing motions, increased interest in food, and the ability to swallow foods that are a bit thicker than purees. Typically, by 8 to 10 months, babies are ready for mashed or small, soft pieces of food.

How much should my baby be eating?
At first, solids are more about learning than nutrition, so don’t worry too much about how much they’re eating. Start with one or two meals a day and gradually increase. By 9-12 months, most babies will be eating three meals a day, along with breast milk or formula.

Do I need to give my baby water?
Babies under 6 months old get enough hydration from breast milk or formula. Once solids are introduced, you can offer small amounts of cooled, boiled water in a sippy cup during meals, but avoid giving large amounts at first, as it could interfere with their milk intake.

Should I give my baby food with added salt or sugar?
It's best to avoid adding salt or sugar to your baby’s food. Babies' kidneys aren’t fully developed to handle large amounts of salt.

What are the signs my baby is full?
Look for cues like turning their head away, pushing food out of their mouth, or getting distracted.
