What are the common allergens for babies?

The common food allergens include:

🥚 Egg
🥜 Peanut
🥛 Cow's milk / dairy
🌾 Wheat
🌰 Tree nuts
🫘 Soy
🌱 Sesame
🐟 Fish
🦐 Shellfish

Common allergens can be introduced during the first year of life when your baby is developmentally ready for solid foods.

When should I introduce allergens?

Common allergens can be introduced when your baby is ready to start solid food this is usually around 6 months.

Introducing common allergens during the first year is recommended as part of allergy prevention.

If your baby has eczema, an existing food allergy or other allergy concerns, speak with your GP or healthcare professional about introducing allergens.

How do I introduce allergens?

1. Choose one new allergen

Start with one new common allergen at a meal so it's easier to identify the food if your baby has a reaction.

2. Offer it in a safe, age-appropriate form

Foods should be prepared in a form that is appropriate for your baby's age and developmental stage.

3. Record the exposure

Use the Tiny Turtle tracker to record what you offered, when you offered it and any notes.

4. Keep offering foods your baby tolerates

Once an allergen has been introduced and tolerated, continue offering it regularly as part of your baby's diet.

Why use an allergen tracker?

When you're introducing several common allergens, it's easy to forget:

Have we tried peanut?

When did we try egg?

Which allergen did we introduce last week?

Have I offered that food recently?

The Tiny Turtle Allergen Tracker gives you one simple place to keep track — so you can spend less time trying to remember and more time enjoying mealtimes.
